What Is an Online UPS?

An online UPS, also known as a double-conversion UPS, continuously converts incoming AC power to DC and back to AC before it reaches connected equipment. Because the load always runs on the UPS's own clean output rather than raw mains power, an online UPS provides zero transfer time when mains power fails or fluctuates.

How an Online UPS Works

A rectifier converts incoming AC power to DC, which simultaneously charges the battery and feeds an inverter that converts the power back to clean AC for the load. Since equipment is always powered through this rectifier-inverter path rather than switched onto it after a fault, there is no transfer delay if mains power is lost, and the output is isolated from voltage sags, surges and waveform distortion on the incoming supply.
